About Our Company:
What is IPA Source?
IPA Source was developed to benefit singers, teachers, and all those interested in
the correct and knowledgeable performance of vocal literature. To further the
comprehension and correct pronunciation of foreign language texts, IPA Source
provides IPA transcriptions and literal translations for immediate purchase and
download. For more information, read the About Us page.
Who manages IPA Source?
IPA Source was founded in 2003 by a professional singer and educator.
For more information, read the About Us page.
How does IPA Source's protect my privacy?
Your privacy and the protection of your confidential information is very
important to IPA Source. Rest assured, we never divulge any personal information
to a third party. See our Shopping Policy page for more information.
About Our Publications:
Are your translations/transcriptions original and legal
editions?
Yes. All translations/transcriptions found on this site are our own unique
editions and are not copied from other sources. Only works that are in the
public domain or works for which we have permission from the copyright holder
are presented on these pages. We are the authors, editors, and publishers and
hold all copyrights to the IPA transcriptions and literal translations. For more
information, please see our Legal Notice.
Your IPA transcriptions are different from what I learned.
Although phoneticians follow certain conventions in creating transcriptions
they don't always agree-especially when dealing with transcriptions intended
for singing. It is not unusual when comparing transcriptions from two sources that
they differ slightly. In order to avoid the question of the individual
preference of one phonetician over another, the transcriptions found on IPA
Source conform to the accepted
transcription practices of the most highly respected dictionaries of each
language. For more discussion on this issue, please see our
Diction Help pages.
Why are there no poetic/recital program translations on
your site?
The primary aim of IPA Source is to provide IPA transcriptions and
literal translations of songs and arias of foreign
language texts. Occasionally, an idiomatic translation of a line is given if the
meaning is not clear from the literal translation. It is our belief that only
when a singer understands the precise meaning of each word will he or she be
able to interpret the true meaning of the poem and imbue each syllable with its
correct emotional content. Poetic translations do not specifically link meaning
with the sound of the syllable. Since poetic translation can easily be found
elsewhere on the web and are therefore not include on this site. For an
extensive collection of translations suitable for recital programs, visit The
Lied and Art Song Texts Page at
www.lieder.net.
About Transcription/Translation Downloads and Print Outs:
How does IPA Source work?
After locating one of the hundreds of unique transcriptions/translations by
its title, you will have the opportunity to view a sample file to make sure you
have the correct text. If you have purchased a subscription, you may either
download the file or have it emailed to you for no extra charge. If you would like to purchase the file individually, add it to your shopping cart
and proceed to the checkout. After completing the purchase process, your documents
will be emailed to you and you will be able to access them from your computer and
make high-quality prints. For step-by-step instructions on using our site,
please see the Using IPA Source page.
What IPA font do you use and do I need to have the IPA
font installed on my computer?
The IPA font used in our transcriptions is the SILSophia (IPA93) font available
for free download from SIL International. Since the IPA font is embedded in
all Adobe PDF files,
you do not need to have the font installed on your computer to view or print our
documents.
How are the transcriptions/translations packaged?
All transcriptions/translations pages are presented in the Adobe PDF file
format with the special IPA font from
SIL International
embedded in each document. Use of this site requires the free Adobe Acrobat
Reader (version 5.0 or higher) which can be downloaded directly from our
Adobe Help
page.
What is PDF file format?
PDF file (Portable Document Format) is a high quality graphic format created
by Adobe Systems and provides a single standard graphic file for all
operating systems (WindowsTM, MacintoshTM, UnixTM and others).
How do I open PDF files?
If the Adobe Reader program is installed on
your computer, the process is automatic. If PDF files do not open for you, you
will need to download the Reader. A copy of the Reader can be downloaded from our site from
our Adobe Help page.
Why doesn't the PDF sample show up after I click on a
song title?
The Adobe Reader (version 5.0 or higher) is not installed on your computer.
See our Adobe Help page for more information.
I have Adobe Reader installed on my
computer but I am experiencing
problems in viewing and printing my files.
It is possible you are using an older version of the Adobe Reader program.
Although there is now an 8.0 version available
directly from Adobe, you can download the smaller 5.0 version of the Reader directly from our site
from the Adobe Help
page.
After purchasing documents,
they never arrived in my mail box.
Documents are emailed to you at the time of the sale. Depending on
your email server, you may need to allow a few minutes for the documents to arrive
in your account. While you are waiting, check your Spam, Bulk Mail, or
Trash folders and make sure to add IPASource.com to your contact list. You can also resend
your order from the Order
History page found linked from your Account Page. The
resend feature is available for 30 days after
the original transaction. If you still do not receive your order,
Contact Us with
your Order/Receipt Number and the date of your purchase and we will email the
purchased files directly to you and work in the background to resolve the
problem. For a complete overview
of our policies, see the Shopping Policies page.

Print-outs are too small or too big.
The Adobe print parameters are incorrectly set. By clicking "print"
in the Adobe reader program the printer dialog box will open. Follow these
steps:
- In the print dialog window, select or de-select the "shrink to fit", "fit
to page" or "shrink oversized pages to paper size" option before clicking OK.
This can change your output.
- In the "Print Setup..." dialog box, please be sure to select your
appropriate paper size (letter)
- You can even scale the output following these steps:
a. Select "Print Setup..." from the file menu
b. In the printer section, click on the "Properties"
button c. In the following windows, click on the "Advanced"
button on the bottom left d. Finally, here you can control every parameter of
your output (such as Graphic scaling, etc.)
If you still have trouble, be sure to have installed the latest version of the
Adobe Reader (5.0 or higher) then
Contact Us.
The IPA symbols are visible on my computer screen but
they print out as boxes. Why?
This is a rare but very tricky type of error that can stem from a number of
reasons mostly related to compatibility issues with older computer systems. The
best solution is to download
the newest version of the Adobe Reader (8.x for PC or 10.x for Mac) available
directly from Adobe
even if you already have a 5.0 or better Reader installed on your computer.
Sometimes the reinstallation of the program will remove the conflict from your
system. If the problem persists, Contact Us and we will
help you find a solution.
About Payment:
How do I pay for the transcriptions.
You have two options. You may purchase a subscription and have unlimited
access to the entire collection for the duration of your subscription or pay for
each file separately. Purchasing individual files makes sense for those who only
need a few translations now and are not sure what they may need later in the
year. If you find yourself coming back to IPA Source several times a month, then
a subscription is right for you.
What payment methods are available?
IPA Source accepts payment using all major credit/debit cards: (VISA, MC,
AMERICAN EXPRESS, and DISCOVER).
How will my purchase get charged to my credit card account?
IPA Source currently utilizes CardService International gateway service to
process its credit/debit card transactions.
Is my credit/debit card information secure?
IPA Source transmits credit/debit card using the Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
provided by Equifax Secure
Inc. to encrypt and decrypt user page requests, as well as the pages that are
returned by the web server. Today, SSL uses a 128-bit RSA key length for the RC4
stream encryption algorithm. This system is widely considered to provide more
than adequate security for commercial purposes, and is the de facto standard for
transactional websites.
Can IPA Source issue a refund?
In common with all online service suppliers, all sales of PDF files
are final. However, a refund to customers who report irresolvable receipt or
printing problems may be issued if the receipt/printing issue cannot be resolved
within 48 hours. For a complete overview
of our Refund Policy, see the Shopping Policies page.
Why are there no shipping charges? What a bout taxes?
Since we sell only digital products for internet delivery, no shipping
charges are necessary. You buy, receive, and print your files in a matter of
minutes! Our editions are pure digital which print out in the highest of
quality. Ohio tax laws require that sales taxes be collected for those customers
whose credit card mailing address is in the state of Ohio.

of our Refund policy, see the Shopping Policies page. Should the

I accidentally deleted the PDF files I purchased, can I
have them resent?
Nothing could be more simple! If you have purchased a subscription, our
complete library will continue to be available to you for as long as your
subscription is active, just download the file again. For files that have been
purchased individually, go to your "Order History" (linked from your
Account Page) where you will be able to "resend" the files. The link remains active for 30 days
but is only able to resend your order to the email address to which it was originally sent.
The Catalog:
Is there a print version of the "Catalog"?
Absolutely! The
Printed Catalog is updated each month. You can find
a
link to it on the home page in the "Resources" box on the right.
How can I obtain a transcription/translation not listed
in the "Catalog"?
Make a request using Contact tab at the top of the page. IPA Source will
then determine whether it is feasible to add the requested text to the on-line
catalog and contact you when it is ready.
How do you decide which texts to offer?
Our first criteria is the availability of the musical scores. By comparing
the contents of the most popular anthologies we have come up with a list of the
texts most
often used. The second greatest source comes from singers around the world
in the form of your requests. In the past we have been able to provide a quick
turnaround-sometimes in the same day! You may make a text request by using
Contact
tab at the top of the page.
Why only Latin, Italian, French, and German texts?
The world of art song and opera literature is vast and it was decided that
until the catalog contained a large selection of the basic repertoire we would
concentrate only on repertoire in the four main singing languages. Plans are now being made
to include repertoire in more languages from experts in each
field. Stay in touch for future announcements.
Will you be offering full opera libretti in the future?
Full libretti are beyond the scope of this website. Although we may make
individual ensembles available from time to time, there is no plan to add entire
opera libretti to the site.
Will you be offering choral literature on the site?
Although solo oratorio arias and occasionally the major works from which
they are taken can be found on our site, translations/transcriptions of choral
literature is beyond the scope of IPA Source. Please
contact
us for more information on specific requests.
Why are the works of some contemporary song composers
included but the arias from Turandot are missing?
It is all about the publishing date of the text of the work. Many
contemporary composers set texts that were published before 1923. In these cases, the music
of the composer is under copyright but the text is in the public domain
according to US law. Turandot did not premier
until 1926; neither the music nor the text may be printed without the permission
of the publisher, Casa Ricordi.
I typed Fauré into the "Search" box and
the name couldn't be
found even though his songs are on the site.
Don't include parts of words that have accented letters. You can find this
composer by typing Faur. Rückblick from the Schubert's Der
Winterreise can be found under ckblick. Fauré's Fleur jetée is
found under Fleur jet or simply Fleur.
