Selected soprano arias by Gaetano Donizetti, hand-curated by Fach

The Italian composer, Domenico Gaetano Maria Donizetti (Gaetano Donizetti), born November 29, 1797, was a leading composer of the bel canto opera style during the first half of the nineteenth century, along Gioachino Rossini and Vincenzo Bellini. It is thought that Donizetti’s close association with the bel canto style influenced other composers such as Giuseppe Verdi.

At the age of 9, Donizetti was granted a scholarship to the Lezioni Caritatevoli school in Bergamo. At age 20, his second opera, Zoraide de Granata, was so successful he obtained a discharge from the military in order to focus on his composing. Donizetti was established internationally at age 33 with his opera, Anna Bolena.

Donizetti had a sad life – he lost his wife after 10 years of marriage and his three children to illness at early ages. While he never recovered from losing them, he was known to be a hard-working and fast-working man, who was helpful and supportive to his colleagues.
